This workshop will introduce participants to the idea of photography as a mindful practice. We will use a number of very simple, accessible exercises to help people settle the mind and sharpen the eye before going out and about on the city streets with our cameras.

Much of the content comes from a tradition called “miksang” which is a form of Tibetan spiritual practice which has been developed into a style of photography, however the course itself is suitable for anybody and has no religious content. Participants can use whatever cameras they have, including phones. Some instruction in camera craft can be given but that is not the purpose of the workshop.

Course content:

10.00 – 11.30. Introduction to the concept of mindful photography. We will do some mindfulness practices and “seeing” exercises. We will explain the key concepts of “flash of perception” and “synchronisation”. We will then continue outside, doing some more seeing exercises and exploring the environment.

11.45 -13.00. Participants are invited to wander the streets with their cameras. They will be given an assignment to do and invited to take a limited number of photographs to fulfil the assignment. People are invited to reflect on the process of taking pictures with this mindful attitude but also on the obstacles that they will inevitably encounter.

13.00 - 14.00. Lunch. Participants give the facilitator their pictures which are loaded on to a slideshow for use later in the afternoon.

14.00 – 16.00. We look at each other’s images and provide feedback. The emphasis is on the response of the viewer rather than offering critiques of each picture, which will be discouraged. We finish with some more settling practices and reflections on the day. Everyone is invited to join the growing mindful photography community in the city and to participate in other activities we arrange throughout the year.
