Learn how to dye fabric a natural blue colour with an indigo dye vat. We will use natural extract from the indigo plant which is native to the tropics, notably the Indian Subcontinent. Beautiful and complex patterns can be created on fabric using a range of techniques, including stitching, folding and tying, with threads, rubber bands, clips etc.
Get involved with setting up the indigo dye vat, tie and then dye cotton fabric samples using a variety of tied, clipped or stitched patterning, including some Japanese shibori techniques. Making use of these techniques, we will then get creative, design and produce our own chosen combinations of tied and dyed patterns on a tote bag, scarf, or a piece of fabric which can then be taken home to be used in a sewing project.
Suitable for all abilities, all equipment and are materials provided. Wear clothes that you don't mind getting messy, or bring an apron. You are welcome to bring a small amount of white clean fabric, yarn or fleece to add to the indigo dye vat.
