Burnishing and Smoke Firing: Six Weeks

Burnishing and Smoke Firing: Six Weeks

  • Tutor: Mike Scown
  • Room: House Studio
  • Type: Adult
  • Level: Mixed

Burnishing is the process of polishing raw clay to a smooth, mirror-like surface, which combines beautifully with smoke firing to produce unique and unpredictable patterns on the surface of pieces. This course uses simple handbuilding techniques such as pinching and slab rolling to produce pieces for slip decoration and burnishing, with participants then taking part in multiple smoke firings using sawdust, newspaper, or other combustible materials to experiment with the possibilities of this process. Pieces are finished off with wax to deepen the surface, and metal leaf can be applied to compliment the natural tones of the smoked clay.

Please bring your own apron if possible.

Work produced will be fired and ready for collection one month after the course ends. There is a firing charge of 50p per 100g.
