Tom James
Tom is the Pottery Coordinator for the Art House, at teaching Throwing on the Whe lto beginners and more advanced students.
In his previous life he was a Musician, performing and teaching extensively throughout the UK. A PhD in composition led to many yeas as a composer-performer with the Sheffield-based collective "Platform 4", and he takes the multidisciplinary skills learned from this period into his role at the Art House.
Having started pottery classes here in 2017, he won a place on 2020's "The Great Pottery Throwdown”, his eye-catching statement pieces proving a hit in the auditions. Tom loves to encourage our studio members to push themselves creatively through a "more is more" approach!

John Chappell
John started his pottery journey in 2017, taking classes in throwing and handbuilding here at the Art House.
His background is hugely varied - an initial training in graphic design led to his work with advertising agencies; but with a return to university education and a subsequent PhD, he changed paths to a scientific career in physics and manufacturing engineering.
He brings both these skill sets to his work at Art House, not only throwing beautiful, precise pots (and teaching his students to do the same!) but also researching and developing our glazes for members to use.

Mark Beachell
I studied art history at Cambridge where I developed my obsession for understanding the practicalities of how art is made. This really drives my job as a lecturer in visual subjects, having taught on courses at degree level in Art history, photography, graphics, 3D design, interior design, and art foundation courses. I enjoy the technical aspects of traditional painting through to cutting edge sculptural work. I’m happy painting in techniques that would be standard in the renaissance or making art from data and 3D printers. I really love seeing people off on their own creative path.

Discovering her love for the freedom of mixed media whilst undertaking a fine art degree she now works in a grungy fashion with paper, fabric, paint and coffee. Combining acrylics with inks, drawing and collage. Taking inspiration from nature and vintage imagery to create narrative in her work.

Marcin Szuba
I believe that artists should follow their talent and a teacher points the way along this path by setting visual problems for students to solve. Over the years I have met many students and all of them saw, responded, and interpreted the world in a new and unique way. Being able to help them on their way to develop as artists and to achieve their goals is what I find fascinating in being a tutor at The Art House.
I earned an MA in Fine Art, Painting from Nicolas Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland. I studied anatomy of human body, techniques of the old masters and technology of painting. I spend long hours on drawing the human form and still life. Most of all I learned to paint people, landscape in plain air, and still life using mainly oil paints. I painted alla prima, inspired mainly by postimpressionists. I also learned by looking at paintings in The Hermitage, Prado, Ufizzi and Alte Pinakothek among others.
In my paintings I focus on painting imaginary landscapes using oil paints. I am inspired by the natural world and I am interested in colour relationships and how beauty brings us closer to the secrets of life. I took part in many exhibitions in the UK and abroad. In 2020 I received the Judges Prize at The Harley Open Exhibition.

Jamie joined the Art House in January 2021 as our Outsourced Finance Manager. He handles the day-to-day finance aspects of running our Charity. His financial skills and experience in the Charity sector have made a significant difference to the Art House operations and helped us to navigate some very difficult financial times.

His interest in outdoor activities gave him the opportunity to live and work in the South of France for 2 summer seasons.
